Lincoln – Judge of the County Court, Ninth Judicial District, Graten D. Beavers, is retiring effective January 31, 2014.

In his retirement notification to the Governor, Judge Beavers wrote that his retirement as county court judge came with mixed emotions and great gratitude. He stated, “I’m very grateful to the State of Nebraska, the legislature, and the voters in this great state for allowing me to serve for over twenty-two years.”

Judge Beavers served on the Nebraska Supreme Court’s Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee from 1999 to 2003, as well as several committees for the Nebraska County Judges Association.  He is the current chairman of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Alumni Association Advisory Council and also serves on the College of Law Alumni Council.  In support of community youth education, Beavers has volunteered as host for the 5th Grade Law Day Shadowing program and coordinated the area mock trial project for several years.  Most recently, Beavers hosted Kearney’s National Adoption Celebration calling attention to the need for foster-adopt families in Nebraska.  He is a Nebraska State Bar Foundation Fellow, a selection by colleagues in the legal profession based on integrity and character.

Also in his letter to the Governor, Judge Beavers noted, “I have always said that I had the best job in the state and I have been very grateful to have the opportunity to serve in this capacity since the day I was sworn in.” He concluded by saying, “I look forward to new challenges of service to my community and the state as I find them.”

After taking the bench in May 1991, Judge Beavers was retained in his position by area voters four times, most recently in 2012.

The first step in replacing Judge Beavers will be for the Judicial Resources Commission to call a meeting to determine whether or not, based on judicial workload statistics, his retirement creates a judicial vacancy on the County Court of the Ninth Judicial District.
