County Court Judge J. Patrick McArdle of Wilber, Nebraska, submitted his retirement notification to the Governor and the Chief Justice indicating his plan to retire July 31, 2014, after more than 31 years on the bench.

Judge McArdle has served on the county court in Wilber and surrounding counties since taking the bench in September 1983.  McArdle has been retained in his position by area voters through several elections, most recently in 2010.

In his correspondence, McArdle noted, “It has been my honor to serve the State of Nebraska as a County Judge of the First Judicial District.  I will greatly miss the outstanding staff, both past and present, that I have had the pleasure of working with in my three counties over the years.  These people have been supportive and loyal beyond what one can hope to receive.”

McArdle has been very active in the Nebraska County Judges’ Association throughout his years as a judge and has served in all offices including association president in 1994.  He has spent a good portion of his career promoting the use of mediation within the court system and supporting the just treatment of the elderly and vulnerable in Nebraska guardianship and conservatorship cases.

He currently serves on the Probate, Civil Procedure, Court Rules & By-Laws Committee of the Nebraska County Judges’ Association.  He is vice-chair of the County Judges’ Education Committee where he participates in design and development of continuing education for county judges statewide.  McArdle has served several terms as presiding judge beginning in 1997.

The first step in replacing Judge McArdle will be for the Judicial Resources Commission to call a meeting to determine whether or not, based on judicial workload statistics, his retirement creates a vacancy in the 1st Judicial District (Gage, Jefferson, Johnson, Nemaha, Pawnee, Richardson, Saline, and Thayer Counties).
