Lincoln – District Court Judge of the 2nd Judicial District, Randall Rehmeier, is retiring effective March 31, 2013, after more than two decades on the bench, serving primarily in Cass and Otoe counties.  Rehmeier served on the county court bench from 1987 to 1990 before his appointment as District Court Judge.

In his resignation letter to the Governor, Judge Rehmeier noted, “I am proud to have served as a judge in this great state for over 25 years.  The duties and responsibilities of being a judge are many and I have given it my best effort.”

Judge Rehmeier has been an active member of many committees throughout his service to the judiciary.  He served as chairman of the Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee as well as president of the District Judges Association. Rehmeier currently serves on the Supreme Court Case Management Committee for Nebraska Trial Courts as a district court representative and will continue to represent judges on the Nebraska Public Employees Retirement Board.  For 10 years, he mentored new judges through the District Judges New Orientation Committee and has served as faculty and advisor for many education sessions.

He closed his letter to the Governor saying, “The legal and judicial system(s) of this state and county represent the cornerstone of what makes this county great.  I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to contribute and serve.”

The first step in replacing Judge Rehmeier will be for the Judicial Resources Commission to call a meeting to determine whether or not, based on judicial workload statistics, his retirement creates a judicial vacancy on the district court of the Second Judicial District (Cass, Otoe, and Sarpy counties).  The Commission is scheduled to meet Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. central time.
