Lincoln – Douglas County Court Judge Edna R. Atkins, 68, is retiring September 30, 2013, after more than 21 years on the bench.  She recently submitted her notice of retirement to Chief Justice Heavican saying, “I have enjoyed serving the State of Nebraska in this (judicial) capacity.  It has been a great honor and privilege to have served these many years in our judicial system.”

Throughout her career, Judge Atkins participated on several local and Judicial Branch committees.  She currently serves on the Minority Justice Committee and the Supreme Court Personnel Board.  She is a founding member of the Midlands Bar Association and a Fellow in the Nebraska State Bar Foundation, an honor based on integrity and character.

After taking the bench on January 17, 1992, Judge Atkins was retained in her position by area voters in several elections, most recently in 2008. She served as Presiding Judge for the Douglas County Court bench in 2001 and, again, in 2003.

The first step in replacing Judge Atkins will be for the Judicial Resources Commission to call a meeting to determine whether or not, based on judicial workload statistics, the retirement of Judge Atkins creates a vacancy in the Fourth Judicial District (Douglas County Court).
