Lincoln – Judge of the District Court, 5th Judicial District, Alan G. Gless, is retiring effective September 1, 2013 after more than three decades of service as a judge in Seward, Nebraska and surrounding areas.

“It has been a great honor and privilege to serve the citizens of the 5th Judicial District for the past 33 years,” said Gless. “I have greatly enjoyed my career as judge on both the county and the district court benches.”

As his legacy, Gless leaves the court community with an abundance of legal writings including: The History of Nebraska Law, Public Access to Nebraska State Court Records and Proceedings, Nebraska Probation Revocation - A Primer, Civil Case Appellate Standards of Review, A Simple Country Judge’s Musings on the Use of History by Trial Lawyers, and many other publications.

Gless served on many Supreme Court, county judge, district judge and State Bar Association Committees.  He was instrumental in shaping Judicial Ethics Advisory Committees both on a national and a state level, having served on committees for the American Judicature Society, the Center for Judicial Conduct Organizations, the National Judicial College and the Nebraska Judicial Ethics Committee.

Gless is a Nebraska State Bar Foundation Fellow, an honor based on integrity and character. Fellows are accredited by colleagues as leaders of the legal profession who contribute to charitable works and community education. Membership recognizes established legal professionals dedicated to improving the administration of justice.

The first step in replacing Judge Gless will be for the Judicial Resources Commission to call a meeting to determine whether or not, based on judicial workload statistics, his retirement creates a judicial vacancy in the district court of the 5th Judicial District (Boone, Butler, Colfax, Hamilton, Merrick, Nance, Platte, Polk, Saunders, Seward, & York Counties).
