The Douglas County Judicial Administrator serves as the court manager, with general supervision over the non-judicial activities and functions of the court. The Judicial Administrator’s Office duties include, buy may not be limited to, preparing the court’s budget; handling personnel matters; procuring supplies and equipment; assisting in jury management; and managing the necessary business and administrative tasks of the court. The Judicial Administrator oversees the three divisions of the Court: Criminal/Traffic, Civil/Small Claims and Probate.
Criminal/Traffic Division

The Criminal/Traffic Division handles misdemeanor cases, including traffic and municipal ordinance violations. Examples of misdemeanors cases include: theft of property valued at up to $500; driving while under the influence of alcohol (DUI) or drugs; disorderly conduct; prostitution; possession of less than one pound of marijuana. The court also handles preliminary hearings in felony cases.

The Civil Division handles disputes between private citizens, corporations, governmental bodies, or other organizations. Civil cases may involve property or personal rights. Some common examples of civil cases are: actions arising from landlord-tenant disputes; auto or personal accidents; breach of warranty and consumer goods; contract disputes and professional liability suits. Civil actions of cases up to $51,000 are handled in county court.
In small claims court hearings are conducted by a county court judge. The damages sought or the money claimed in small claims court does not exceed $2,700. The court procedure is informal. Juries are not used, attorneys are not allowed and the parties involved must represent themselves.
Probate Division

The Probate Division of County Court handles proceedings in which the court has jurisdiction over the personal representative and the assets of the deceased; protects heirs from fraud and embezzlement; protects federal and state governments so all taxes are paid by the estate; protects creditors of the deceased. The Probate Division handles the processing of appointments of guardians and conservators by the judiciary.
