Gene Cotter was appointed Chief Probation Officer of District #3A, the Adult Probation Office in Lincoln, in October of 2009. He began his employment as a probation officer in District #12 in Gering doing traditional probation work for the County, District and Juvenile Courts. In 1995 Mr. Cotter became an Intensive Supervision Probation Officer providing intensive probation supervision for both adults and juveniles in Lincoln and for the communities located in the southeast corner of Nebraska. In 2006 he became a Specialized Substance Abuse Supervision Officer working in Lancaster County. In April, 2007 he was promoted to supervisor for the Adult Probation Office in Lincoln.
Mr. Cotter served on numerous Probation Committees including Probation’s Public Relations Committee, Training Committee, and Community Corrections Programs Committee. He presently is a member of the Justice Behavioral Health Committee and the Community Corrections Advisory Board. Mr. Cotter was certified as a Probation trainer in 1993 training a variety of courses. He also wrote or helped write the training curriculum for several courses.
Mr. Cotter’s community activities include presently serving as Chairperson of the State Operations Council for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. He also serves on the Lancaster County Sexual Assault Response Safety Board and the Accountability Audit Response Team. He is a youth group sponsor at his church and has served as president and vice president of the church council, and is also active in his neighborhood association.
Chief Cotter earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice with a Minor in Psychology from the University of Nebraska/Lincoln in 1990.
