If you are involved in a child custody court case, you are required to attend a basic level parenting education class. You may also be required to take a 2nd Level class if there is child abuse or neglect, domestic intimate partner abuse (DIPA), or unresolved parental conflict.
What You Will Learn in a Basic Level Class:
- Developmental stages of children
- Helping your child adjust to the changes
- The court process
- Mediation
- Conflict management
- Stress reduction
- Parenting time
- Transitioning your child between parents
- Information on child abuse or neglect, DIPA, and unresolved parental conflict
What You Will Learn in a 2nd Level Class:
- How to safely transition your child between parents
- Potentially harmful impact of DIPA and unresolved parental conflict on children
- Communication techniques
- Resource and referral information for:
- Victim and perpetrator services
- Batterer intervention programs
- Mental health services
- Substance abuse services
- Other community resources
Types of Classes Available:
Classes are offered in different formats. You can select the type of class that best fits your learning style.
- Classroom - There are two options for classroom training: in-person and virtual
- In-Person: For this type of class you go to the provider's training site and participate in training at the specified date and time.
- Virtual: For this type of class you will join the trainer and other participants in a virtual classroom, such as Zoom, at the specified date and time.
- Online class - This is a safe-paced class that you work through the training material online at your pace and at a time that works best for you.
What to Expect After Attending a Class:
You will receive:
- Written proof of completion and you do not have to pay extra to receive this.
- The form that you need to complete and submit to the court with the proof of completion. This form is called "Certificate of Completion of Parenting Education Course." This form is available in English and Spanish and instructions on how to complete the form are also available.
How to Select a Class:
You can select any of the classes listed below. All are approved by the State Court Administrator.
- Select the style of class that fits you.
- Find out the cost for class. Some classes are offered at a reduced price based on your income level.
- If you want to take a class in person or online class, look at the class schedules. You will want to find a class that is offered at a time that you can attend.
- Determine how to register for the class. You may be able to register through a website or by phone. If you are unsure how to register, contact the class provider. Their contact information is part of their listing.
