Sarpy County Wellness Court Celebrates Another Graduation

Thursday, May 25, 2023

The Sarpy County Wellness Court recently celebrated the graduation of Caileen at the Sarpy County Courthouse in Papillion on May 5, 2023. Sarpy County Wellness Court serves individuals with mental illness who are facing criminal prosecution by providing stabilization, assistance, and reducing the risk of future offenses. The ceremony commemorated Caileen’s successful completion of an intensive program that involved comprehensive community supervision and full accountability.

Caileen’s charges were dismissed upon fulfilling the program’s requirements, which typically span a minimum of 18 months. The graduation ceremony was presided over by Judge Stefanie Martinez, with the presence of Sarpy County Attorney Tyler Loontjer and Sarpy County Public Defender Christopher Lathrop.

Wellness Courts are an alternate route through the criminal justice system for nonviolent drug-related offenders, utilizing a specialized team process that functions within the existing court structure. The courts are designed to reduce recidivism and substance use among individuals with substance use disorders. In addition, the court aims to protect public safety and increase the participant's likelihood of successful rehabilitation by utilizing validated risk and need assessments, early and individualized behavioral health treatment, frequent and random chemical testing, incentives, sanctions, and other rehabilitative and ancillary services.
